Fire Safety At Industrial Estate

Fire At Blk 2019 Bukit Batok Industrial Estate Park A

A fire broke out in an industrial unit dealing with electronic goods at Blk 2019 Bukit Batok Industrial Estate Park A on 26 Jan 2010 around 10:00 am. The fire spread quickly to a neighbouring unit belonging to the same tenant.

Upon activation of the fire alarms, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived within 5 minutes and had the fire under control in 20 minutes. The damage was extensive and losses were estimated to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Electrical and sanitary facilities for the tenants in the block were also disrupted.  The tenant above the affected unit had to be relocated in order for him to continue with his business. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

HDB staff swung into action and were on site to supervise the restoration of the electrical and sanitary supplies. They went from door to door to update the progress of the temporary rectification works.  Mobile toilets were also installed for tenants’ use.

Fire Safety

Fire is destructive and can result in substantial losses and even death in some cases. It is therefore vital prudent to adopt fire safety measures before an outbreak of fire.

Some pointers to note:
  1. Avoid placing combustible materials such as pallets, packing material, paper products, flammable liquids in common areas such as front of the units or at rear corridors;
  2. Do not block the fire escape path or staircase;
  3. Ensure that fire extinguishers and fire fighting systems are maintained at regular intervals and, in good working condition;
  4. Fire hose reels and cabinets that are located at the  units shall not be obstructed;
  5. Exit doors shall not be locked or obstructed when workers are in the premises;
  6. Manual call points are not to be tampered with;
  7. Electrical appliances can be fire hazards. Be sure to switch off all appliances at the end of the day. Use only approved appliances;
  8. Do not leave burning joss sticks or candles unattended; and
  9. Do not burn incense paper within the building.

Fire Evacuation Procedures

HDB conducts two fire drills practices for its industrial buildings annually. Tenants and their workers are strongly encouraged to participate in these fire drills to raise awareness in emergency and fire evacuation procedures which includes:
  1. Basic fire fighting equipment and procedures;
  2. Escape routes and stairway exits; and
  3. Designated assembly areas.
